The answer is not simple, but there are hubbers who earn a very healthy monthly income on Hub Pages. If you can write quality articles (hubs), are prepared to learn and do the things necessary to succeed, then you can be a success story on this site.

To Write Your First Hub

Whatever your reasons for putting pen to paper, or finger to keyboard if you will, you will never feel like a successful writer if no one ever reads your work. You might be an exceptionally talented writer with unlimited creative potential, but who will know if no one sees your creations. Hub Pages is a great place to develop your skills as a writer. You don't have to submit your article to dozens of publishers and wait weeks or months to only receive a stack of rejection letters. Hub Pages lets you publish whatever and whenever you want, provided it doesn't promote hate, violence or inappropriate sexuality. If you follow these guidelines, it is unlikely that you will ever get a rejection letter. Just the same, you should keep in mind that writing on the internet has it own set of rules.

To get you started, I have included a short description of how to SEO (Search Engine Optimization) your hubs. This simply means that there are things you can do to give your hub a good running start. If you have ever Googled a word on the internet, then you will appreciate the reasons behind this procedure. If, for example, you put the words, “farm life,” in the search box, when the results come up, notice how many results are found. It might say, “page one of 4,000,000 results.” If you are like most people, you will find the information you seek about farm life on the first 2 or 3 pages. Information about farm life on the 4 millionth page will never be seen. You don't want to put time, energy and creativity into your hub only to have it die a slow death on page 4 million in the search results.

The following is a method to SEO your hub to assist in getting it to page one of Google. It may not be the last word on this topic, but it will get you started. This may seem complicated at first, but rest assured it is quite simple once you understand the basics. If “farm life” is the subject of your hub, go to the Google Keyword Search Tool. GOOGLE KEYWORD SEARCH TOOL LINK. You can sign in using your Gmail password, or create an account. You can use the keyword tool even if you don't sign in, but it may not generate the CPC - to be discussed monetarily.

Type “farm life” into the “find words” box and click the search button. From the list that is generated, find the lowest competition keywords (Competition column) with the highest monthly searches, (Global Monthly Searches ) and the highest CPC ($Cost Per Click). The higher the CPC, the more money you earn when someone clicks on the Google Ads in the border of your published hub. The higher the monthly searches, the more people who could find your hub based on the keyword. The lower the competition, the less competition for your hub in the search engines.

From the generated list we find that the keyword, “farming,” has low competition, has 7.5 million monthly searches, and has a CPC of $0.61 and would make a great keyword to create a hub around. Compare this to the keywords, “quote farm life,” from the same keyword search. Yes, the CPC is over $12.00, but there are only 1,600 people searching for this keyword per month and the competition is so high that you might never be able to get your hub to the first pages of a Google search. Better to stick with the low competition, high monthly searches keyword, “farming.”

Now that you have found a good keyword, it is time to integrate it into your hub. As you write your hub, the following guidelines can be applied.

First, the keyword (e.g. “Farming”) should be in the title of your hub.

Second, the same keyword should be in the URL. (e.g. www.farming.. .com) The Hub Pages publisher will do this for you automatically once the keyword is in the title.

Third, the first paragraph of your hub should have the keyword in it and ideally it should be in the first sentence.

Fourth, the keyword should be scattered through the body of the text. Don't compromise readability by putting the keyword in too many places.

Finally, the keyword should be in the last paragraph and ideally in the last sentence.

Also, when prompted by the Hub Pages publisher to add “tags,” make sure the keyword you have chosen is added. Tags are what first gets the the search engine's attention and it then searches your hub for the same keywords.

There are a lot of different opinions on how to effectively SEO your hub. Consider the above description as a way to at least get you started! Remember, the most important SEO for your hub is quality writing on interesting subjects! In addition, there are a few other tips you can use to make your hub more readable.

Readability Index No sentence should be more than 25 words long.

No sentence should have more than 25% of words that are longer than 3 syllables.

Keep paragraphs short. The reading mind needs a break now and then.

Articles should be neither too short or too long. (more than 500 words and no longer than 1500)

Backlinks

When I first started writing on Hub Pages, I really didn't know what was meant by the term, “backlink.” I did know that if you clicked on that blue sentence in an article, it would take you to another page, or another website. That is exactly what a link is - it takes you to another page. For example, clicking the blue sentence at the bottom of this article will take you to the sign up page for Hub Pages. All the blue sentences in this article are outbound links and each will take you somewhere else. A backlink, is the opposite of an outbound link. It is an inbound link from another page that will bring you to this page. So why are backlinks so important?

They are important because the search engines use them to evaluate your hub page in determining where it will rank when someone searches for your keyword. Let's suppose you have written a great hub on farming. Maybe someone else (call them writer B) has written an article on the best types of chicken feed. Writer B has read your hub and feels that her readers would really enjoy your farming hub, so writer B places a link in her article to your hub. When writer B's readers click on that blue link, it will bring them to your hub on Farming.

When the search engine scans your article it will find that inbound link. To the search engine, it appears that someone thought highly enough of your article to place a link to it and therefore it ranks your page higher. If two people have both written an article on farming using the same keywords, the number of backlinks to each article will determine which of the two will rank higher. Enough good quality backlinks can go a long ways to getting your hub on page one of Google.

Remember, when Googling a word or sentence, it is estimated that 40% of visitors will click on the number one spot on the results page. For a keyword like "farming," with 7.5 million monthly visitors, 40% of that is about 3 million visitors per month. If you own that first spot, it is equal to 3 million people reading your article on farming and clicking on the Ads in the borders of your hub page. Win! Win! Win! Backlinks and SEO of your hub will help get you to that number one spot.

Promote Your Hub

Another great way to get people to read your hubs is by promoting it to your friends and followers on Twitter, Face Book and Hub Pages. Once you have finished publishing your hub, you will be prompted at the top of the page to share on Face Book and on Twitter. With just click or two you can notify everyone of your latest hub.
